Sophos
Anti-Virus - Installing, updating, and using the new SUNY Oneonta
anti-virus software
Sophos is one of the
the most popular anti-virus applications in Europe and Asia.
It is well known for it's ability to protect network systems
from viruses. It also has a particularly good desktop client.
This client is now available here at SUCO. It is free to install
and update for anyone with a valid SUCO ID and password. This
training shows you how to install, update and use the software.
The first thing you will download will be the Remote Updater. This
application is responsible for downloading the software itself,
and then updating it with new virus signature files.
- Go to http://www.oneonta.edu/technology/comptech/sophos_install.asp.
- Click on 'Click here to download the update'.
- Download the rupdtsfx.exe file to the desktop. It is a zipped
file.
- Double-click to expand it. Accept the default location.
- If it runs automatically, good. If not, go to the expanded folder
and double-click on 'setup.exe'.
- Allow the install to take place.
- At the end of the install, right-click the blue/red icon in the
tray, and choose 'configure'. This opens the configuration dialog
to connect the computer to the sophos server.
- In the 'Primary Server' tab, the 'Address' field will read 'http://www.oneonta.edu/sophos/.
- The 'User Name' and 'Password' fields will hold the individual's
SUCO usercode and password. This will allow authentication with
the server, and will provide updates to the software. Make sure
the user confirms the password.
Click OK.
Double-click the Sophos icon in the tray.
The synchronization with the server will take place automatically
(the first message you'll see on the synch dialog will be 'could
not contact server'. Ignore it).
The installation is automatic and requires no intervention from
you.
At the restart prompt, restart the system.
The anti-virus will perform a virus check of the entire system the
first time it is restarted after the install. This is a one-time
sweep, and the user will manually set all sweeps afterwards.
3. Manually updating the virus signature files top
Double-click the Sophos Icon in the
tray. The synch process will be automatic.
If there are no updates, the message will read 'No files needed
updating'.
If there are updates, they will be downloaded, and an automatic
update process wil take place. No restart will be needed.
