Trouble Starting OWA and Other Programs: The Security/Spyware/Adware Issue

We have recently seen some people who have been attempting to access Blackboard and OWA, but have been unable to do so.  Either they can't get to the page, or the page starts to load, but it hangs up.   We have seen some cases where the Quicklinks on the Oneonta site don't work.  There are a couple of things we have tried that seem to work.  You should try these procedures to see if they resolve the issue.

Removing the Spyware/Adware

1. What to look for

- Attempting to access any link from the Quicklinks on the Oneonta web page leads to a page with a message referencing Directory Service and Virtual Directory.
- Attempting to access OWA leads to a hangup while the page is loading.

2. Browser Security Settings

One of the things that have affected the students' access to the network has been a setting in the browser security.  You can change this easily.  Here's how:

- In IE, go to Tools > Internet Options (or go to the Control Panel > Internet Options).
- Click the Security tab.
- Click the Trusted Sites icon.
- Click the Sites button.
- In the field labeled Web Sites, remove any reference to oneonta.edu.

3.  Removing the Spyware/Adware
top

We're finding that one of the insidious effects of all of the "piggyback" programs that come down with Kazaa and other file sharing programs is to affect the network connection.  One of the things that tends to happen is that the access to Blackboard and other links from the Oneonta home page is blocked.  You may remove some of the programs that may be affecting this situation.  Here's what you do:

Go into the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, and look for the following programs:

- CommonName
- PAD Lookups by n-Case
- e-Zula

> If you see either of these programs, uninstall the both of them.
> Uninstalling PAD Lookups may lead to the uninstallation of a program named e-Zula.
> Restart the computer.  Even though you have uninstalled the above listed programs, some of their processes may still be running.
> When the computer has restarted, go into My Computer
> Click on c:\ and go into the Program Files folder.
> Delete the CommonName and Ezula Folders, and empty the recycle bin.

Other programs that may not affect this particular issue but are spyware and adware can also be removed.  These include:

- SaveNow
- BackWeb
- Downloadware
- New.DotNet Domains
- New.DotNet Application
- Nethancer
- Onflow Player
- Webhancer Customer Companion
