Using the Res Tech Message Board.

Academic Computing Services has a forum section, on which you can post comments, requests for help, etc.  This is a good place for you guys to learn from each other, like on a bulletin board service, or a newsgroup.

The site to go to for this is http://helpdesk.oneonta.edu/phpbb.  You will need to register.

a.  Registration:

- Go to the website, and click the "Register" link near the top.
- Agree to the terms.  Since I believe that you guys are over 13, click the "I Agree to these terms and am over or exactly 13 years of age" link.
- By clicking this link, you agree that you're older than 13.  By the way, you're also agreeing to the terms.
- Fill in the fields.  Only the ones in the first section are required.
- Submit the info.  You will receive an e-mail with a link that you must visit to activate the account.
- Once you visit the link, you can log into the forums.

b. Enter the Forum

- Go to http://helpdesk.oneonta.edu/phpbb and scroll to the Res Tech section.
- There are three places you can go:

- General Discussion:  A bulletin board that includes emoticons and a calendar.  This is a place where you can place general information, calls for help, etc.
- Coverage Requests:  If you can't cover your lab, or are going away, you can post a coverage request here.  Obviously, you can answer to a request as well.
- Announcements:  Meetings, etc.
KEEP THIS PROFESSIONAL AND CLEAN.

You'll notice that the three categories look the same.  They represent the category of info you wish to post.  Thus, if you have a coverage request, keep it in Coverage Requests.
We'll go over this in the training this week.

What to do if your printers print messy pages.

Some of you have been having problems with massy printing in your labs.  One of the problems that can occur is that toner may accumulate on the interior, under the cartridge.  This toner can find its way onto the print drum and cause the smudges you see on the pages.  If you see these smudges, you should do the following:

- Take the cartridge out.  Carefully open the cover which sits on top of the print drum (on the bottom of the cartridge; I'll demonstrate tomorrow).
- If you see toner marks, the cartridge is no longer useful.
- Look inside the printer, under where the cartridge sits.  Make sure you have some paper towels.
- Wipe the toner off of the area.
- Insert a new cartridge.

Tip:  Windows ME Universal Plug 'n Play (UPnP)

UPnP is a feature of Windows ME which tends to self destruct the operating system.  Sometimes, when you're receiving errors in Win ME, you can uninstall UPnP.  This may or may not solve the problem, but it certainly doesn't hurt.  BTW, this does not affect the ability of ME to detect and install PnP devices.  Here's how you do it.

a. Go to the Control Panel > Add Remove Programs.
b. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
c. In the components section, uncheck the box by Universal Plug and Play.
d. Click OK.  If asked to restart, do so.
