Using the Laptop to Test the Connection

When you troubleshoot a connection problem, you have to determine whether the problem stems from the computer or from the port.  You have been given laptops to definitively make this decision.  There is a process to testing the connection, and this process is as follows.

Always ensure that your system is in good working order and consistently connects to the internet.

Check the basics

The adapter light is off, and the computer is receiving a 169 or 0 ip

- Are there lights on the adapter in the computer in question?
- Use a known good cable in place of the student's cable.
- Check all network settings to make sure that configurations aren't responsible.
- Re-install TCP/IP.
- Uninstall any Nethancer or Webcellerator programs.
- Once you've checked all of this, connect your laptop into the port in question.

- A light always means that there is a signal between the port and the adapter.
- This situation indicates a problem with the connection script or the server.
- Again, you're in no position to fix this problem.
- Call me or write.  I'll contact the network manager to resolve the issue.
