The first place to start is to clean out your Inbox. Check the size of the e-mails that you want to keep. If you have e-mails which contain large files or pictures they can take up a lot of space. Also dont forget to empty out your Sent Items, Drafts and Deleted Items folders.
Yes it does, however you must save the file first in order for the automatic process to work. The process only works when it knows where to save the information to.
You should backup files that are very important to you. Things like school work, photos ... basically any data that is critical to you and that you cannot afford to lose. If you are not sure back it up anyway, better to be safe than sorry.
Yes, there are programs out there. Some of them are free and others you will have to pay for. Microsoft provides a free program called SyncToy, and can be downloaded from the following site http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/synctoy.mspx
Instructions for how to setup this program can be found on our website, at http://helpdesk.oneonta.edu/xoops/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=72 It all depends on your specific needs, and what you feel comfortable with. If you have a lot of hi-valued work, then frequent backups would be the way to go. If you are a user who doesnt do too much, maybe just surf the Internet and write a paper here or there, then you dont need to frequently backup your data. A good rule of thumb is once a week. Remember to backup your data to media separate from your computer, then if something happens to your computer your data backup is separate. Also test your backups to make sure they are complete.
Backing up your data is one of the most overlooked and forgotten tasks of owning a computer. Many people dont realize how important backup data is until its too late. There are multiple ways to lose data. Some of the ways include viruses, file corruption, hardware failure, or simple human error. Picture that you are working on an important paper that you have been working on for weeks, then all of a sudden your hard drive fails. What are you to do when you have only 3 days to get the paper retyped? Backups can save you!
The Residential Network does not get turned off during the breaks. Any downtime during these times would be communicated to the college community. If you have trouble connecting to the Internet please call the Help Desk at x4567

This is something that we recently investigated. It would be extremely expensive to purchase a site license that allowed all students to have access to Microsoft Office. To fund this purchase, the student technology fee would increase substantially. We don't believe that it would be fair to charge all students for software that only a small percentage of students would benefit from. We'll keep looking for an affordable option but in the mean time students will have to purchase this on their own.

The Macs in the Milne lab do require that you enter your Oneonta computer account username and password in order to gain access. This is the same account that you use to access Angel and your Oneonta email account. If you need to create your account you can do so online here

Problems of this type are frustrating and we can certainly emphasize especially when so much of your school work is tied to the Internet. Make sure you report any problems when you are having to the Help Desk at the time you are having them; you will notice an improvement. We guarantee it!

That is a big issue, please advise your professors that YOU pay for printing. Though there are ways to cut down on the amount of your print quota you use on printing class materials. For instance, did you know you can print 2 PowerPoint slides on 1 page with space for taking notes? Or that you can save a document to your p drive and reference it from any lab? Printing 2 pages on 1 is a quick and easy way to spend half as much. We will try over the next couple of moths to highlight ways you can more effectively manage the amount of stuff you need to print using your print quota.

There are no plans at this point for color printing in the Residence Halls. We will certainly look at new color printing technology and re-evaluate placing color printers in the Residence Halls.

Thanks for the feedback; slow logons are a problem that may be specific to your account. Get a Help Desk ticket entered and we can see if we can speed up your logons. If it is a lab issue we can troubleshoot that as well. We take these issues very seriously as slow logons in the labs cut down on class time. Get a ticket and well fix it.

The print quota was established by the Student Technology Committee to curtail a printing budget that was increasing exponentially. RAs and other student organizations have a printing budget and printing services available for your use. Contact your organization to see how you can get your jobs printed without having that money come out of your pocket.

Some of the Residence Halls cannot accommodate any more computers but we can look at increasing the number of computers in the Residence Halls that can support more.

This is an ongoing problem that we are trying to address with our printer supplier HP. We have noticed a higher incidence of problems with our current model of printer. The only thing we can suggest is that many times printers break down due to non-authorized persons attempting to fix a small problem; which creates a much more complicated problem and longer downtime. If you see a problem with a printer, call the Help Desk and a technician will be dispatched to resolve the issue. Please do not try to fix the problem yourselves. There are many small parts that can be easily broken.

PlayStation and Xbox consoles must be registered on the network like any other computing device. To register your gaming console identify your MAC address (this varies by devicecheck your owners manual or your console manufactures website for details) and open a Help Desk ticket. The device will then have to be manually registered on the network. This may take a couple of business days depending on the time of the year. Please be aware that there is only 1 port in your Residence Hall available to you. You may have to remove your computer from the network to use your Xbox or PlayStation online.

After that contact the Help Desk and a ticket will be created for your issue. It is important that you be very specific when you request a problem with your gaming issues. Frag on.
