ResNet is a service offered by SUNY College at Oneonta Telecommunications and Academic Computer Services. It provides high-speed network access to individual residence hall rooms, specifically Internet access for e-mail, telnet, FTP, and World Wide Web browsing. The speed is many times that of a traditional modem and it does not tie up your phone line.
ResNet service is available in all Residence Halls.
All resident students are provided with one ResNet connection as part of the basic room fee. There is no out of pocket expense unless your computer requires a network interface card (NIC).
You need a NIC (network interface card) to connect your computer directly to the network. This is different from a modem that is used to connect via a telephone line.
Many computers come with a network card already installed. If you do not have a network card in your computer, you can purchase one at the Telecommunications Office in room 236 on the second floor in the Netzer Administration building. Cards for Macintosh computers are not available.
The Telecommunications Office sells NIC's for PC's for $50.00. Cards for laptop computers are $100.00. These cards are installed by the Res Tech in your residence hall and are guaranteed to work with our network.
Helpdesk Support Consultants hired through the Information Technology Helpdesk support computing in the residence halls.
The Residential Network does not get turned off during the breaks. Any downtime during these times would be communicated to the college community. If you have trouble connecting to the Internet please call the Help Desk at x4567
