ASCI - Academic Secure Computing Initiative
The ASCI program was established in 2003 to help alleviate some of the headaches of computer maintenance from educators here at SUNY Oneonta.
We all know the drill, Microsoft releases an update to Windows, but you don't have the time to think about installing it right now. You've got classes to teach, and stuff to do.Time slips by and your computer gets more and more vulnerable to all those pesky worms and junk. That is where we come in.What we do is configure your computer to download and install updates from our Windows Server Update Services server. We also it to automatically update and setup your Anti-Virus and Firewall with correctly for the campus network. Because your computer is now a member of our Microsoft Active Directory, you also have instant access to things like your p drive for file storage, and your w drive for updating your web space.
Available to ASCI users starting this semester is the addition of Remote Assistance to the ASCI configuration. This enables professional technicians at the helpdesk to request a screen sharing session with the computer in your office. We can quickly and efficiently resolve issues with your permission.
Also available this semester is our new SoftServ Software Service program. SoftServ Software Service is Self Service Software Installs. New software is published out to ASCI computers and made available via the Add or Remove Control Panel. This gives you the opportunity to install software on your schedule. If you would like to have a technicial from the Information Technology Helpdesk install, that option is available to you as well. Just give us a call and we will setup an appointment for someone to come to your office.
What we have strived to do is to give you the best of both worlds. A safer PC that you can use the way you need to.
What ASCI Does:
Allows your computer to automatically receive virus software updates.
Allows your computer to automatically receive critical operating system updates.
What ASCI Does NOT do:
Take control of your computer.
Give control of your computer to someone else.
Constrain you in anyway from using your computer. You are still the administrator of your computer. That is, you can still install or remove software, or reconfigure your computer.
