Recommended Computer Specifications

Academic Computing Services Minimum Recommended Computer Specifications

SUNY Oneonta is among the most wired colleges in the country. Our educational resources incorporate significant use of computer technology. In order for students to fully take advantage of all of our technological resources, we recommend that the computer they bring to campus meet or exceed minimum specifications regarding speed, storage space, memory, and applications. Listed below are minimum, AND recommended computer specifications for computer systems, and some applications we recommend the computer to have.

Misc

Warranty: 1 Year warrantys come standard on most computer purchases. We recommend extending that to 3 years.

Wireless:  In order to connect to the college's wireless network, your wireless devcie must support 802.11B, 802.11G, or 802.11N.  We recommend that your devcie be capable of supporting all three. 

CD/DVD Burner: 16X DVD+/-RW Drive comes standand on most computers these days and is useful for backing up files.

External Storage: USB Drive/External Hard Drive for larger projects.

Printers: Printing is availalbe on campus so a printer is not necessary

Cables: Network cable for desktops is necessary to connect to the wired network. Optional for laptops but useful for a faster connection speeds.  We recommend a 15 foot network cable.

Software: Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows and Office X for Mac.
